Folk artist Howard Finster was born in Valley Head. Finster, who also worked as a Baptist preacher, earned national acclaim for his fantastical paintings and sculptures that were inspired by religious visions. Best known for his sculpture garden, the Plant Farm Museum House or Paradise Garden, near his home in Georgia, Finster also produced commissioned works for the Coca-Cola Company and musical artists R.E.M. and the Talking Heads. Over his life, Finster completed over 46,000 works, many of which have been exhibited in museums across the country, including the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Library of Congress.
