Designated Alabama Bicentennial Schools

Schools desiring to achieve bicentennial school status must develop a proposal that engages in community outreach and improvement projects to connect their classrooms with their local communities. These connections foster an appreciation for the vital role of civic engagement in the life and work of a strong community and state. Up to 200 schools will be selected to be Alabama Bicentennial Schools. These schools will also receive a $2,000 grant, which is designed to support the implementation of successful bicentennial projects and activities. Need some guidance filling out your application? View our sample applications for elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools.

The deadline to apply to become an Alabama Bicentennial School has passed, and no further applications will be accepted.

Alabama Bicentennial Schools of Excellence

Twenty-one schools, three from each of Alabama’s seven Congressional districts, will be recognized as Bicentennial Schools of Excellence. These schools will participate in commemoration ceremonies in Montgomery on December 14, 2019 and will be recognized by the governor for their achievement. In order to qualify, all schools designated as Alabama bicentennial schools will submit a final report on their school project. This final report is due by August 1, 2019. A committee will read all final reports and determine the 21 schools of excellence.
