On January 26, 2018, the Alabama Bicentennial Commission and Mercedes-Benz U.S. International, Inc. officially launched the Alabama Bicentennial PastPort. The press conference, held at the Mercedes-Benz Visitors Center in Vance, was broadcast live by Alabama NewsCenter.
The Alabama Bicentennial PastPort is a guide to historical destinations in each of Alabama’s 67 counties, complete with historical information and beautifully designed original artwork. Each county features a list of destinations—historic sites, museums, landmarks—where visitors can have their books stamped.
The publication was designed by Tatum Design, and sponsored by Mercedes-Benz U.S. International, Inc., Airbus, Verizon, and Alabama NewsCenter.
Speakers included Alabama Bicentennial Commission Chair Sen. Arthur Orr, CEO of Mercedes-Benz U.S. International Jason Hoff, Verizon Wireless representative Gary Wood, and Alabama NewsCenter editor Michael Tomberlin. In attendance were fourth graders from Vance Elementary School, who sang the Alabama state song and received the first copies of the PastPort.
Sen. Orr highlighted the significance of the project, saying “The bicentennial of Alabama is a once-in-a-lifetime moment, and it demands a project that can make a lifetime of difference. These unique opportunities will inspire a younger generation to learn about the great treasures of Alabama, while fostering education in a stimulating and exciting way.”
Jason Hoff, CEO at Mercedes-Benz U.S. International, added, “This program encourages kids to learn about Alabama’s rich history by visiting the historic sites, museums, and landmark locations that tell its story. We’re proud to sponsor a program that provides these learners with the resources to make these trips not only educational but also entertaining.”
