The Fifteenth Annual Semmes Heritage Day will be held at Semmes Heritage Park on May 5, 2018. The community family fun day commemorates the history and culture of Semmes through hands-on activities such as soap making and yarn spinning and weaving.
The historic 1902 Semmes School living history museum and the replica of the 1902 Mt. Pleasant Church will be open to the public for self-guided tours. Other family-friendly activities include square dancing, wagon rides, and children’s games. The festival will begin with the firing of a cannon, followed by the presentation of the flag by Boy Scouts Troop 90 and a performance by a local school choir. Admission and all activities will be free.
In conjunction with the 2018 Semmes Heritage Day and the Alabama bicentennial celebration, the Semmes Branch Mobile Public Library is also hosting a rotating local bicentennial art show. The “Semmes Heritage Bicentennial Art Display” opened on April 11, 2018 at the library.
Artists were tasked with creating artwork that celebrates the past and present places, people, and stories of the Semmes area that have a lasting impact both in the community and statewide. The exhibit features a diverse array of art mediums, including painting, sculpture, photography, and embroidery. The Bicentennial Art Display will conclude on July 10, 2018. Another bicentennial art exhibit is scheduled for April 10, 2019 in accordance with the official Alabama bicentennial commemoration.
