The Birmingham Bicentennial Committee officially launched its commemoration of the bicentennial on October 27. The downtown event, entitled “ALABAMA 200: I'm Coming Home,” began with an exhibition by three Alabama collegiate marching bands: Alabama A&M University, Alabama State University, and the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

The official kickoff ceremony followed in front of the historic Alabama Theatre, featuring noteworthy speakers such as historian Dr. Leah Rawls Atkins, Executive Director of the Grammy Music Education Coalition Dr. Lee Whitmore, Director of the Alabama Department of Tourism Lee Sentell, and Birmingham Mayor William Bell.

The night concluded with a concert at the Lyric Fine Arts Theatre, arranged and directed by Dr. Henry Panion III, Chair of the Birmingham Bicentennial Committee. The headlining performers, The Temptations Review, performed a medley of their greatest hits with music provided by a fifty-piece orchestra.

Musical guests included Broadway star Jennifer Holiday and American Idol stars Ruben Studdard and Bo Bice, both natives of Birmingham.
